Functionalism within Design

When it comes to art and design, Chadgar (2015) notices that functionalism is definable through the eyes of an artist rather than the appreciators, or the general public. That is, it is noticeable that not many individuals observe art in the same manner as artists and art enthusiasts do. Therefore, in most cases, the definition of functionalism is relative, depending on diverse perspectives. Crossman (2017) agrees with this point and adds that artists find it challenging on how to prioritize functionalism in their works.

It is crucial to consider various aspects, such as aesthetics, in creating an artistic product. However, functionality is something that ought to come as the priority. Moreover, functionalism tends to assume plenty of artworks whereby functionality is specified. Bhattacharya (2014) mentions that various designs need to characterize a cause of delight while embedding an emotional and uplifting feeling. In essence, great design features aspects of utilitarianism, flamboyance, and artistry, but with an emotional reaction.

Since design usually brings out beauty, it is worth noting that functionalism has to go hand in hand with aesthetics. This is something that artists have always embraced over the centuries and past decades. Nonetheless, technology has disrupted how artists and designers have been approaching things, especially when it comes to creating something unique (Crossman, 2017). There is the difficulty of coming up with something that is not only of great design but one that is also very functional.

Demand for functional artistic designs has been on the rise, particularly in the past few decades. The reason for this is technological advancement, whereby every aspect of our lives now is influenced by designs. Therefore, functionalism within design has changed to include features that are relatable to the majority of people (Chadgar, 2015).
